Negligible power gains over sound gains?
A cold air intake, particularly one that is bigger than stock, opens up the airflow to allow the engine to breathe better and produce more horsepower. With a naturally-aspirated engine, the power bump is negligible, but the cold air intake will yield anywhere between 10 to 25 horsepower if you’re doing a build on a turbocharged engine. It is recommended to pair it with a tune to optimize the use of the maximize the performance gains. However, most people opt into intakes due to the sound. You can often tell when someone has an aftermarket intake when you hear a “swoooooosh” coming from the engine.
1. Injen SP Short Ram Air Intake System
“The SP series of cold air intakes from Injen Technology will allow your engine to breathe deeper and enhance the performance that youve been craving. The SP series of cold air intakes is Injens flagship system in their lines of traditional aluminum cold air intake systems. Additionally, this SP intake includes a fully serviceable Injen SuperNano-Web dry air filter, which provides increased filter surface area allowing for greater airflow and unbeatable filtration.”

2. aFe Magnum Force Stage 2 Intake
“This Stage 2 cold air intake system produces 14 max horsepower, 18 lbs. x ft. torque and out-flowed the factory intake by 29% on the BMW 335i (F30) N55. This system includes a durable 18-gauge, powder-coated heat shield and features a washable/reusable conical Pro Dry S air filter for maximum flow. This air filter is constructed with 100% polyurethane, for long life and multiple cleaning cycles. A huge 3.5 inch one-piece mandrel bent wrinkle-black powder-coated intake tube, maximizes air velocity providing maximum performance and throttle response. This is a direct bolt-on kit and requires no cutting or drilling.”

4. AEM Induction AEM Cold Air Intake
“The AEM 21-754DS Performance Cold Air Intake System produces horsepower and torque gains by replacing your vehicle’s restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing. This air intake system was designed, tuned and dyno-tested to fit specific BMW 335I models. Air enters the system through an oversized AEM Dryflow synthetic washable air filter for outstanding air flow, filtration and performance. The air filter is placed into an open-bottom AEM air box which is designed to protect the air intake system from engine bay heat while also helping to produce a more aggressive engine sound during acceleration. The air intake tube is made from lightweight, yet durable, high-density polyethylene and is aerodynamically engineered to flow air freely into the engine’s turbo inlet.”

3. Eventuri Carbon Fiber Intake
“Eventuris intakes are made from Carbon Fiber, creating not only an aesthetically pleasing product, but also one that has a low level of thermal conductivity for the best possible heat management within the engine bay. The overall design process focuses on maintaining a smooth, laminar flow of cold air to the engine by optimizing every bend and internal feature of the intake piping. Eventuris unique air filter housing also creates a large captive volume beyond the air filter, and has a smooth radius to provide the best possible airflow into the intake tract.”

5. Burger Tuning BMS N55 Performance Intake
“The BMS F30 N55 Performance Intake retains everything that is good about the OEM N55 intake system including the cold air ducting and light weight heat shielding airbox bottom; but, completely replaces the restrictive top end of the OEM intake with new high flow ducting and a performance filter to match.
During our extensive dyno testing the BMS N55 Intake out performed all other available N55 intake systems posting gains of up to 10+ horsepower to the wheels. In addition to freeing up some power turbo spool speed is improved. Not to mention an incredible sound improvement. You’ll finally be able to hear your turbo spooling!”
