The Diesel powered 740Ld xDrive

The upside of having a diesel-fueled engine lies within its better mpg, greater boosts of torque, and possibly fewer visits to the repair shops.

Both the BMW 730d/Ld (265 HP with approx. 457 lb-ft max. torque) and the BMW 740d/Ld (US spec: 255 HP with approx. 413 lb-ft max. torque; European spec: 320 HP with approx. 501 lb-ft max. torque) undertake striking accelerations and provide improved fuel efficiency compared to their gasoline-engine counterpart. Only the BMW 740Ld xDrive is available in the U.S. market.

Like every BMW model, cutting-edge engineering is heavily invested into the making of the 7 Series’ diesel engine.  These technologies include the Turbochargers with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), CommonRail Direct (CRD) Injection, and the BluePerformance technology, which drastically lowers pollution emission and creates one of the cleanest diesel vehicles in the world.

The Petroleum Plug-in Hybrid Model – The BMW 740e xDrive

In 2016, an all-wheel-drive Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) 740e xDrive with BMW eDrive Powertrain System joins the BMW family. It comes with a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a lithium-ion high-voltage battery powered electrical motor. The assemblage includes an electric drive unit assimilated into an 8-Speed Steptronic Transmission.

BMW eDrive

The eDrive system in the BMW 740e is similar to the system in the BMW i models. It allows the driver to control and adjust the hybrid’s driving mode through a series of eDrive settings via buttons located on the center console. The sustainable luxury-model can run purely on electric energy at zero emission up to an approximate range of 23 miles at 75 mph top speed.

Gear switch can be seamlessly carried out and adapted according to the current driving condition and route. The system is also equipped with the newly developed converter clutch, predictive drivetrain, and the energy-saving Auto Start and Stop function. As always, optimal driving experience with the 7 Series is delivered with enhanced fuel consumption and increased dynamic performance.

The Air Suspension System in the BMW 7 Series

The suspension system in the redesigned BMW 7 Series consists of double-wishbone front suspension with five-link rear suspension and Electric Power Steering system.

The front and rear self-leveling air suspension powered by an electric compressor raise the chassis from the axles. The air level for each wheel is independently controlled, and the level control can be adjusted manually to raise the chassis when traveling on uneven roads. The system automatically lowers the chassis back to the standard setting at higher speeds over 22 mph.

The Driving Dynamics Control in the BMW 7 Series

The Driving Dynamics Control switch is conveniently located on the center console for quick access to different driving modes. COMFORT, SPORT, ECO PRO and ADAPTIVE modes can be easily initiated with a single push of a button.

The 7 Series’ Driving Dynamics Control contains the following driving modes:

    • COMFORT Mode: This is the default mode for the standard drive. In addition, COMFORT+ mode is stored within the COMFORT mode button
    • ECO PRO Mode: This switch activates settings in “fuel conservation” mode, which achieves fuel conservation by approximately 20 percent.  Settings within the ECO PRO mode can be further customized via the iDrive. The following individual sub settings can be configured for more energy saving:
      • “Coasting” mode
      • Route-ahead assistant
      • ECO PRO route
  • SPORT Mode: This setting enables the most performance and dynamic in driving. The SPORT mode can be customized via the iDrive function located in the center console
  • Adaptive Mode: the ADAPTIVE mode is now available on the BMW 7 Series through the Driving Dynamics Control function. ADAPTIVE mode links up to the navigation. It continuously monitors the present driving conditions to properly manage and adapt the system’s Dynamic Damper Control, steering, and the Steptronic transmission to ensure optimal operation

BMW Efficient Lightweight in the BMW 7 Series

BMW Efficient Lightweight is the concept of futuristic engineering with sturdy lightweight materials. Adopted from the BMW i model lightweight design, the application of aluminum, highly rigid steel, magnesium, and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) make up the structural composition of the passenger cell barebones called the Carbon Core of the BMW 7 Series.

Approximately 190 pounds of weight saving and 25% of carbon dioxide emission reduction is achieved with increased strength in comparison to the prior generation of the 7 Series. The ingenuity creates the nearly perfect load distribution and lowers the center of gravity for improved handling, fuel efficiency, and comfort.

Remote Control Parking in the BMW 7 Series

This is the possibly the coolest function in the sixth generation BMW 7 Series. Remote Control Parking is basically an automatic parking function that moves your car safely in and out of a parking space without the need for a driver to physically operate the steering wheel.

The process of parking and reversing out of a parking space is mainly controlled by three functions: Park Distance Control (PDC), Park Assistant, and the Surround View sensors. Drivers can use the BMW Display Key to bring the car in and out of a spot when the vehicle is in a straight position directly facing the parking space. Watch this video to see how the Remote Control Parking works.

The Active Kidney Grille in the BMW 7 Series

Aerodynamic engineering has been an essential part of the BMW design concept. It is a fundamental makeup of the BMW EfficientDynamics. The design of such aerodynamic elements drastically improves the drag coefficient and reduces air resistance by 10% compared to the previous generation.

The BMW Active Kidney Grille in the sixth generation of 7 Series still maintains their signature BMW look. However, behind this illustrious grille, are the aerodynamically functional air vents that automatically open and close to optimize airflow.

Depending on temperature factors of the vehicle and the speed of travel, BMW Active Kidney Grille air vents control the amount of cool air allowed to enter the engine compartment. For example, the grille’s air vents are shut during vehicle startup to assist warm-up. In turn, vents are open during high-performance periods so that ideal aerodynamic efficiency and cooling can be achieved.

The Redesigned Air Breather and Air Curtain in the BMW 7 Series

In the BMW 7 Series, the Air Breather on the side fender and the Air Curtain in the front apron are redesigned aerodynamic features for air flow channeling and cooling of the wheel arches. The arrangement reduces turbulence and drag around the wheels, allowing more fuel saving, less emission, and better performance.
